Radiator Re-Coring Presentation by Dennis Allsop

On March 8th at 2:00 pm, Dennis Allsop, a long time member, did an amazing presentation for us on Re-Coring a 30-31 radiator.   The project started in Hershey in 1991 when he could not find a radiator with a perfect core for his second Model A restoration. He actually did this project over a two year time frame which included about 120 hours of work.  It definitely was a labor of “love” by a guy who is a perfectionist and a very talented and patient machinist/mechanic.  He researched and connected with companies that produced brass tubing both here and abroad. Then he ordered copper fins from a Connecticut company. He had to order enough material to produce five radiators to get the companies to agree to produce materials to his plans.  Finding a machine shop to produce four die plates to form, dimple, and punch the holes needed proved difficult and took about a year.   In order to complete the project, Dennis had to make a jig to press fit all 132 fins and then solder each one to the tubing.  After a labor intense re-assembly of the core to restored tanks, the radiator was tested 3 pounds of air in a tank of water.  Each step of the process was demonstrated on a board for all to see.  Dennis actually wrote an article about this project in the MAR/APR 1994 The Restorer magazine and distributed a copy to supplement his presentation.

2019 CHRISTMAS PARTY, SO MUCH FUN!

Our Little Rhody Model A Club – led by Susan Mosca – again – had a really fun time at Richard’s Pub in East Greenwich, RI!  Festive & Bright!  Susan met us with shiny boas and head bands and Christmas light necklaces and more as we walked in.  Appetizers were there and then the dinner!  Again it was superb. No one went away hungry.  After dinner our Sparky Santa, assisted by Sue distributed gifts to everyone. But warned us not to get too attached!  Sue led us in a  game related to Santa’s lost SAC where we were instructed to pass the gifts along from right and left till he found his SAC again… lots of giggles.  We did have a bit of a meeting where officers were greeted as they came and went as the New Year approaches.  Dawn Mennucci presented the Herb Allen Award to Dottie Cece and the Carol Hathaway burns award to Sparky Pakuris. Members contributed a lot of Toys for Toys for Tots again this year. Merry Christmas!

2019 Fall in Little Rhody

This fall, after the Harvest Tour and The Columbus Day Parade, Little Rhody Model A Club members were able to participate the annual “Chicken Run” at Wright’s Farm sponsored by the Minutemen Club in Massachusetts, and the Veteran’s Day Parade in Wickford Rhode Island.  Looking back, it feels like we were quite busy this year!  In truth, these events are annuals, and keep us on track year to year.  The weather was pretty good for all of these events, and attendance was high.  We have been welcoming some new members coming into the club, and that is terrific!

CHARLES H. HOWARD, SR

HOWARD, SR. , CHARLES H. "CHARLIE"
80, of North Kingstown, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2019. He was the beloved husband of Patricia A. (Hoxsie) Howard for 59 years. Charlie served his country honorably in the U.S. Army.  He was a graduate of New England Tech and in 1962 Charlie established Howard's Heating Service in Coventry before moving to North Kingstown in 1972, where he worked until retiring in 2017.

He was a distinguished and founding member of the Little Rhody Model A Club since about 1962.  Charlie received numerous MARC of Excellence Awards.  He was a fine point judge and active in the Model A Restorer’s Club at the Regional and National Level.  His “Number 9” 1931 Closed was the envy of all the Model A enthusiasts.  The Howards included their children and grandchildren when attending many Model A Club events.  Because of this, many of the long time club members remember and embrace this whole family at this sad time.  Several Little Rhody members drove their model A cars in a convoy to the Veteran’s Cemetery in Exeter, Rhode Island in honor of Charlie at the time of his burial service with full military honors.

2019 Columbus Day Parade

The Holiday fell on October 14th this year.  The day started damp and dreary but unfolded into a nice breezy fall day.  The participants arrived at the Bowder’s home for “Coffee AND” around 9 o’clock.  Off to the parade we went around 11 AM.  The Bowders, the  Mennuccis, the Osbornes and Don McNeil met up with the Mendonca’s at the line up in Newport.  The parade attendance was hampered somewhat by the gray skies, but we enjoyed the event as usual, waving at the crowd.  Afterwards, we all went to lunch at the TICKETS restaurant for the third year in a row!  Nice food and great company!

The September Harvest Tour

Bob Osborne invited members to join in a tour of orchards and farms in Central Rhode Island on September 21st .  Six people/4 Model A s arrived at Orchard Farm School to start the tour at one o’clock.  The weather was perfect – a sunny, breezy early fall day!  We visited four orchard Farms starting with Knights arm.   We started out towards the field where people were picking apples, but all decided about the same time we’d rather watch other people do that!  And we did!  From there, we went caravan-style to the Barden Family Orchard.  We wandered through the farm shop to sample wares and crowd watch.  Then it was on to the Dame Farm & Orchard in Snake Den State Park.  Gorgeous flowers, veggies and fruit!  The last stop was Confreda Farms where those who wanted to had a snack before heading for home.  A really nice outing!
